Rep. McKinney to speak at HRC Cleveland dinner

Cleveland-U.S. Representative Cynthia McKinney will be the keynote speaker at the 4th Annual Human Rights Campaign Cleveland Dinner.

The dinner is scheduled for Saturday, April 19 at Cleveland's Marriot Key Center. Organizers of the fundraiser hope to attract a record 650 people.

Representing Georgia's 11th District just east of Atlanta, McKinney is that state's first African-American congresswoman. When U.S. Supreme Court rulings on the Voting Rights Act allowed her district to be re-drawn as predominantly white, national attention focused on McKinney's November 1996 re-election campaign. In a startling victory, she solidly defeated her Republican

challenger 58 to 42 percent.

Cleveland Dinner is indicative of her longtime support of lesbian and gay civil rights," said event co-chair Elizabeth Berrey. She continued by citing McKinney's swift denunciation of the February bombing of Atlanta's predominantly lesbian Otherside Lounge.

Comedian and actor Jason Stuart will emcee the dinner. Since comingout on Geraldo in June 1993, Stuart has maintained a packed tour of comedy clubs around the country. He is currently developing a television sitcom with Paragon entertainment and has also appeared on Comedy Central's Out There in Hollywood, Part III.
